Tips for a Great School Year
Ease the family back into the school year schedule. Summers are a great time to break routine, but getting back into the routine before the school year begins is an important step to making the first days of a new school year less chaotic. Set your child’s alarm to the time they will have to get up when school starts a week (or two) before school starts. Have your child get up and go through school day routines. This will allow them to ease back into the school year and will allow you to make changes to your schedule before the school year begins.
Create a Calendar for your family. Create a calendar and post it in a central place (or for more tech savvy families set up a shared online calendar). Highlight important dates and times and get into the habit of updating it.
Plan Before you Shop for Back to School. Take some time to plan before heading to the store for your child’s clothing or school supplies. Empty drawers and do an inventory of your child’s current clothing. Also, check your school’s website for a dress code. Many teachers have a classroom supply list, but stalk up on the basics, pens, pencils, back pack, note books, etc.
Get Your Papers in Order. Many schools will require documentation from immunization records (check your schools immunization policies ahead of time), report cards, citizenship, medical examinations (for athletics), be prepared before school starts.
Emergency Numbers. Provide your child and your child’s school with emergency numbers and go through safety rules about traveling to/from school and what to expect when they return home to your Canoga Park apartment.
Talk it Out. Whether your child is new to the school system, new to the school or attended the same school; talking through expectations, fears, concerns, and interests before school starts will help with the first year jitters.
Following these tips will make transitioning from the lazy days of summer to the new academic year easier.
