As summer winds down and the kids go back to school it is time to think about fall cleaning, but cleaning your Canoga Park apartment should make your home healthy and not leave behind potentially toxic chemicals.

Here are some suggestions for using green cleaning solutions and techniques at your home to make sure that your apartment is healthy AND clean.

• Use a natural bathroom cleaner.  The commercial cleaners work, but they also are known to leave behind traces of toxic chemicals.  Instead try these healthy bathroom cleansers.
  • Grapefruit and salt make a great non-abrasive for removing stubborn stains. Smells great too!
  • Vinegar and water (50/50 mix) are a great way to clean your bathroom tub, mirror and sink. This is great for the showerhead too.
  • Vinegar and baking soda or nontoxic abrasive like Borax made into a paste is a great way to remove soap scum.
  • Use oxygen bleach instead of chlorine bleach to clean your toilet basin.
  • Baking soda and a squirt of liquid soap with a wet cloth or rag can help get out stubborn stains.
• Green clean your kitchen. Many of the same green solutions you can use in your bathroom are great for your kitchen as well.  Try these:
  • Clean grease by applying undiluted vinegar to the greasy surface. Let it sit for a while, then wipe it down.
  • You can also put some baking soda on a sponge and scrub stubborn stains.
  • If all else fails use vegetable oil. Using a paper towel or rag apply the grease to the stain, clean in a circular motion and then wipe down with a clean cloth or a microfiber cloth and vinegar.  Weird, but it works!
  • Vinegar and elbow grease work great on cleaning cabinets. It is safe for both you and your cabinets.
• Other rooms in your home.   Use these natural remedies in other rooms of your home.
• Half a cup of pure lemon juice mixed with a cup of olive oil makes an excellent furniture polish.
• A 50/50 vinegar and water mix is good for cleaning hardwood floors.
• Vinegar and lemon oil will help clean and polish furniture.
